  1. both your local stations are on the same line, the Harlem Valley line, so ithat choice is a matter of convenience for you. The Harlem Line goes to Grand Central Station.

From there, you need to get to Penn Station, where Long Island RR trains go. You can take the subway (the 7 or Shuttle to Times Square, then switch to any southbound/downtown train (1,2,3 and 9 serve one side of Penn; A, C and E reach the other side) or you can walk (if you don't have a lot of baggage).

The Port Jefferson or Ronkonkoma lines both serve Hicksville.

  2. You need to take Metro North from where you are down to Grand Central Terminal, then take the subway to Penn Station, then take the LIRR to Hicksville.

In a few years, MTA will be completing a new LIRR terminal at Grand Central, which means a direct transfer from Metro North to the LIRR will be possible then.  But for now, yes, it's cumbersome and you have to transfer so many times.
