Can you use a young persons railcard on a ticket machine to get a ticket? If so how do you prove that you have got one to a machine? I live in the South East.

  1. Trains suck!

  2. Hey dummy !

south east of what?  Los Angels? San Diego? San Francisco? Seattle? New yorik USA ? Florida? South America?

    India? Great Britain? Canada?

you think we must have ESP or something!

or a crystal ball sorry my crystal ball is broken!

  3. Excellent question! I've never noticed an option.

*Never* get on a train without a ticket. Even if it's just to the next station on the line. Once upon a time stations had little machines that gave you a ticket with "authority to travel" for when the station was closed, and you could pay the ticket inspector the difference on the train.

Now they expect everyone to queue by these machines which are hateful!

  4. just pay the fare and quit trying to buck the system

  5. yes you can get one at a machine, the machine itself doesn't check you have a railcard but it says on the ticket that you bought it from a machine so the conductor blokey on the train will usually ask to see your railcard, presuming they actually check tickets which they rarely do on my trains.

To do it you select where your going, once this is done there is a button at the bottom of the screen to add a railcard, click on that and young persons railcard will show up at a cheaper price

  6. yes u can i have a railcard and use the machines all the time u only have 2 prove it when u get asked by the inseptors

  7. No I am afraid you cannot use a YP railcard on a ticket machine. the only way that you can get the cheaper tickets is through the ticket office at your local station or on line. (I have not ordered on line so I do not know how that work either)

  8. Some more modern machines have railcard options (but sadly not zone extension options) - e.g. I think those on Charing X station do, but often you'll have to queue up with all the other technophobes.

ps. For all you Yanks who don't get it, well now you know how it is when questioners assume you know they are in the US

  9. There is an option to select railcards on the screen where it asks you to check and confirm your selection. (though this may vary by Machine type)

While the Machine doesn't check, your ticket will be prominantly marked with "Y-P" which tells rail staff to check for a railcard

  10. If you are using the Southern or South Eastern Ticket machines, select your ticket then select discount ticket and young person. Dont forget the minimum fare requirements on Peak time services.

The proof comes when an Inspector, Conductor or Gate assistant checks your ticket.

  11. Yes you can get the discount using the machines, you do not need to show proof when purchasing from the machine but you will need your railcard when you pass the ticket barriers and on the train.

If you don't have a railcard and try to buy a discounted ticket your ticket is not valid, you will have your confiscated and will have to buy another one and this may include a £20 fine.

I can't tell you how to obtain the discount because i don't know what type of machines your train company uses.

  12. Yes you can!  There is a option which you can select which Railcard you have.

You don't have to prove to the machine that sells you the ticket that you have a Young Person's Railcard.  You must carry your railcard around with you as the ticket you have purchased from the machine will only be valid with it.

  13. thats because I am afraid you have to book online or at the ticket office or over the phone sorry

  14. Our local machines have options to select the railcard you have to give the discount fare.

The only discount it doesn't have is the railway employees discount - I suppose this is to stop people getting jealous.
