Well, you can hop onto any RER C bus and the last stop is Versailles. You can hop on from the Musee d'Orsay, Invalides, the Eifel tower etc. It should not cost more than 5 Euros for a roundtrip ticket, maybe even a little less. Every 10 minutes there is a train to Versailles.

You can also take Bus # 171 which departs from a stop right above the Pont de Sevres Metro station.

It will drop you off right in front of the Chateau (The train station is a 10 minute walk...if you don't get lost).

The bus to get back is just on the other side of the street.

The trip takes 26 minutes from the Pont de Sevres and will probably give you the only glimpse you will have of the Parisian suburbs (The bus passes thru rather pleasant suburbs).

If you choose this method you can board the bus using three ordinary zone 1-2 Metro tickets. Your just take all three tickets and put them in the punch machine at the front of the bus at one time. So the cost of the trip will be a little more than 3 euros each way if you buy your metro tickets by the "carnet" of 10 tickets.

You have a number of options... there are trains leaving from Saint-Lazare train station in Paris, and others from Montparnasse train station, for starters. Also, there is more than one train station in Versailles. However be assured that there are frequent trains between the two cities, so you should be fine regardless of whether you're leaving in the morning, afternoon, or evening. "Versailles is served by Versailles – Chantiers station, which is an interchange station on Paris RER line C, on the Transilien La Défense suburban rail line, on the Transilien Paris – Montparnasse suburban rail line, and on several national rail lines.

Versailles is also served by two other stations on Paris RER line C: Versailles – Rive Gauche (the closest station to the Palace of Versailles) and Porchefontaine.

Finally, Versailles is also served by two stations on the Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban rail line: Versailles – Rive Droite and Montreuil."

My advice is to buy "Le Passporte" for 25 euros.  This includes the round trip train (C line as noted above-any train that begins with a "V" gets you there) and admission to both the palace and gardens.  This also gets you the self tour headphones and the tram transportation on the grounds.  Well worth the price and is all inclusive, except food.  Rick Steves has a write up on this and the URL is below.  Have a great trip and enjoy everything!!  We did and it was wonderful.  Le Passporte also gets you to the front of the queue!!
