  1. You are correct, if there is a way for vehicles and trains to collide, it will and does happen. People drive right through the gates and dont see them. If I had a dollar for every "close call" I would retire. Over/under passes are the safest but as you state, horribly expensive. The worst crossings are slowly being replaced but many times it literally takes more than one fatality before it is even considered

  2. What people need to know is that crossing a railroad track without slowing down and looking to see if there is a train to come is acutally against the law!  That crossbuck that says railroad on it that looks like a big white "X"  actually means yield.  Also when people see it they think its going slower.  Its an optical illusion that people think they train is going slower than it acutally is so people try to "beat the train"  People just need to learn to  1. Stop  2. Look 3. Listen 4. LIVE

  3. What's not good enough?  The lights, or the train crew?  People need to understand the dangers involved in being on and around the tracks.  It would cost entirely too much money to put overpasses over all those roads.  The tracks have been there for a long time and they shouldn't jump out and surprise anyone.
