  1. NO!!

An investigating officer will ask because they are accustomed to and to them it is a traffic accident.

But all an engineer is required to show is photo ID and engineers certificate.

A driver's license is not even required to be an engineer, we dont drive on highways and are not licensed by the state, it is a federal certificate. If you produce a driver's license there will be an accident reported on your driving record.

My Dad showed his drivers license when asked to and his insurance company tried to raise his rates because it was on his driving record.

  2. What if a plane hit the train? Would the pilot ( if he survived ) have to show his license?

  3. An engineer does have a license to drive a train.

Yes, he would show it to the police officer.

He also might show his regular drivers license, there  is no better form of identification.

  4. A drivers license is to drive a car.  To drive a train, you have to have a FRA certification card.  You can actually have this and not a drivers license.  I am an engineer for CSX.  The last car I hit I showed my FRA card and my CSX ID card.

  5. Never!  Let the police officer arrest you before you produce your drivers license.

  6. NEVER show a vehicle driver's license to a police officer after a train / vehicle collision.  The collision will appear on your driving record as an "accident," and they do not mention you were running a train.  Insurance rates will go up at the least, or the accident may result in cancellation.

These days all FRA certified engineer's are issued a license.  Furnishing your driving record is a part of the certification / re-certification process.  In addition, many operating department employees (engineers and conductors) are also equipped with a photo ID issued by the carrier for which they work.  These two documents are all you should ever show.  If they want to take you to jail, let 'em.  You'll be on continuous time, anyway.

Just be sure you take the reverser with you when you go.....

  7. Actually, the engineer will be required to produce his railroad engineer's license (whether or not the automobile driver survives!).  Thanks for asking.  Good luck!
