Trainer, Charlie Lister ready for clash with trainer, Mark Wallis, in the second round after winning the first with Jordans Chris
The eight heats of the first round of the Ladbrokes East Anglian Derby were held at Yarmouth Wednesday night, 5th September. Each grade OR heat was raced over 462 metres and promised the winner £125 prize money. The heats saw some of the main stream trainers battling over the prerequisites of the eventual challenge.
For the Order of British Empire trained, Charlie Lister, the heats have paved path for the championship that he is highly likely to win for a twelfth time.
The trainer was well represented through the races as he had his entries in four out of the eight heats. Mark Wallis was another prominent trainer who had more than an entry in the first and last heat of the first round.
Even though half the line-up of the first heat was from the kennel of trainer, Mark Wallis, the best ranking that he could take back was the third position.
Racing to the wire in 27.86 seconds, and winning the £125 prize money was the Charlie Lister trained, Jordans Chris. The Kent Derby winner, Ballycowen Dave, was taken down by Crash’s son towards the concluding moments of the race as the Chris Allsopp trained, Ballycowen Dave, missed the chance by just ¾ of a length.
The runner-up clocked the track distance in 27.92 seconds.
Charlie Lister’s under charge did dominate the initial heat, but the least time clocked in for racing through the 462 metres track was set by Millwards Matt in the second heat. The Paul Young trained completed the trip in 27.52 seconds and won by the margin of 1 ¾ lengths.
The third heat was timed the same as the second and once again the honour went to trainer, Paul Young who had his trainee, Bubbly Phoenix, winning the race by a highly impressive margin of 6 ½ lengths.
The fourth and fifth heats of the first round went to Seamus Cahill’s kennel as Droopys Reason settled the race in 27.66 seconds, and then Loughteen Blanco took 27.55 seconds for making it to the other end.
The round had the curtains rolled with the success of trainer, Charlie Lister, and had them drawn on the same note. The final heat was won by, Taylors Sky, in 27.76 seconds as he defeated Pennys Pong, by four lengths.
The second round draws for Monday, 10th September will see the confrontation of the two most successful trainers of the first round, Charlie Lister and Mark Wallis.
