Trainer, Ed Dunlop, wins the second Hong Kong Vase this time with, Red Cadeaux
The six-year-old chestnut gelding, Red Cadeaux, has remained without success since a while now, but when he did set his mind at taking all by surprise, he accomplished that just in the literal sense. The Ed Dunlop trained won the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Vase. He brought the mile and four furlong race to a sensational end with jockey, Gerald Mosse, onboard.
The race seemed to be in the highly capable hands of the jockey, Johnny Murtagh, who was riding the William Haggas trained, Dancing Rain. However, just as the track distance was reduced to final three furlongs, the duo compromised on the pace.
The concluding phases of the race saw Red Cadeaux, Jaguar Mail, Liberator and Dancing Rain fighting and struggling for the lead that did not seem very easy as jockey, Gerald Mosse, seemed to be in an unforgiving mood.
The early on pace setter, Dancing Rain, faded away just when the field was close by the wire and the French opponent in the line-up, Meandre, ended third.
It seemed as if the William Haggas trained had burnt out all the energy in the opening furlongs of the race and did not have much to offer as the race reached the concluding phases.
This edition is not the only when that found its way to Ed Dunlop’s stable, he won the 2005 race with his under charge, Ouija Board.
Even though Cadeaux Genereux’s chestnut gelding did not bring back any amazing results or rankings during the past few attempts, the trainer never lost hope in the potential of his under charge to handle the heat and competition in a graded event.
Mosse told At The Races: "He showed something in Japan (eighth in Japan Cup) and I was confident today.”
"He picked up the first one and fought to the line."
The last time the six-year-old won a race was on 18th May, 2012 in the Group 2 Sportingbet Yorkshire Cup at York race course over a mile and six furlongs.
This success came in after five failures in a row.
In the end, the gelding did prove himself capable and trustworthy. His future targets have not been laid out as yet, however, as always, the trainer will select just the top of the line races for the chestnut.
