Trainer, Henderson, taking the Hennessy field with Roberto Goldback and Bobs Worth
The ten-year-old bay gelding, Roberto Goldback, who joined trainer, Nicky Henderson’s stable at the end of October this season, has finally been directed for the Saturday’s Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury. So now, the hallmark trainer will get represented in one of the most important features of the National Hunt season by two entries. His ante-post favourite, Bobs Worth, leads the line-up of the spectacle.
"We've had a slight change of heart and we have decided Roberto Goldback will run in the Hennessy after all," he told Press Association Sport.
The Simon Munir owned was initially pointed for a race over a shorter distance on Friday. The trainer’s faith in the new under charge revived after recalling his success at Ascot when given a chance. Roberto Goldback got to post success on his profile almost after a year.
The nine-length winner of the Grade 3 United House Gold Cup Handicap could not be denied the glory of the Hennessy.
Nicky Henderson’s second hopeful for the Saturday highlight was trained in Ireland, first under the supervision of Jessica Harrington and then Dessie Hughes.
Initially, the Seven Barrows handler was doubtful about the participation of his ante-post favourite too, and that was due to the ground conditions. That was earlier this week, and after a trip to the Berkshire venue he found the ground to be soft and heavy in places.
He has taken the risk of letting his popular, Bobs Worth, take his chances and prove his potential against all odds. Besides the rest of the competitors, he will now also have to look out for his stable mate, Roberto Goldback, who is bound to raise the bar in the field.
He said: "He's a stayer and while it will be testing ground, he's not a two-and-a-half-miler. It's not going to be easy as he has a lot of weight, but we are happy with him.”
"The ground will not be within a million miles of what he really wants but it seemed pointless to run in the shorter race. I had a little chat with Simon Munir (his owner) and Anthony Bromley and we decided to go for the Hennessy instead.”
