Trainer, Peter Eurton’s 2011 honour to be taken by Marketway by winning the Del Mar Debutante 2012 for the connections
The three-year-old filly, Weemissfrankie, became one of the most prominent players in the division of juvenile fillies after winning the Grade 1, $250,000 Del Mar Debutante Stakes on 3rd September, 2011. She made one of the historic turn of foot for kicking the decisive strides of the Grade 1 spectacle.
The Peter Eurton trained defeated Lady Fairbanks by 1 ¼ lengths and timed the seven furlong track in a minute and :23.20 seconds. It was not only the first Grade 1 success of Sunriver’s daughter but was the first time for the trainer too.
She even made the jockey, R. Bejarano, proud by being the one of the greatest rides for him and getting him one of the most influential races.
“I knew I was on the best horse and I rode that way,” Bejarano said “She felt good all the way around. At the three-eighths [pole], I could feel I had a lot of horse under me and I went wide with her. I wasn’t going to go down inside there and let them try to run over me.”
“She’s got a lot of class and the mental part about her is so strong."
The filly named after the late Hollywood actor, Frank Alesia, broke her maiden in the Maiden Special Weight on 20th July, 2011 at Del Mar over five furlongs. It did not even take Weemissfrankie a minute to settle the race in her favour.
For the 2012 edition of the race, Marketway gets the nod after winning the Boulevard Casino Stakes. The victory was reassuring enough for the owner, Glen Todd, to send the half sister to Logic Way, to the Del Mar Debutante.
Her pedigree is the prime reason for her selection for the race as the Troy Taylor trained is also a half sister to Big Truck.
“A lot of horses with turf breeding run well on Polytrack,” said Todd. “There aren’t any races for her here, so we might as well find out just how good she is.”
How bright will her luck shine in the Grade 1 event for the juveniles will not take very long to unfold.
