Trainer, Richard Hannon bags the British Championship for a straight second time
When it comes to winning the British title for the flat racing trainer, the triangle finishes at Aidan O’Brien, Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Hannon. However, the 2011 battle sizzled between Sir Henry Cecil and Richard Hannon.
Cecil came loaded with Frankel, Midday and Twice Over. It took all the effort of the Hannon team to keep off the endangering threat to the Championship title.
On the other hand, the hopes for Hannon were tied to the performance of Census, who was the third favourite for the Ladbrokes St Leger but the actual burden of gracing the trainer with the title were on the shoulders of Best Terms and Harbour Watch.
Richard Hannon’s ace horse for the 2011 season was Canford Cliffs. A horse who can pull a string of five Group 1 victories in a row is nothing less than a true treasure for any trainer. His last two Group 1 successes were part of the 2011 season while the
remaining fell on the 2012 profile.
Trgula’s son won the Group 1 JLT Lockinge Stakes on 14th May, 2011 at Newbury over a mile. The five-year-old then took over the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes (British Champions’ Series) on 14th June, 2011 at the Royal Ascot over a mile.
Hannon's stable jockey http://www.racingpost.com/horses/jockey_home.sd?jockey_id=3793#topJockTabs=jockey_race_record&bottomJockTabs=jockey_form said: "The boss wouldn't even be trying. He doesn't think about the figures, he just keeps sending out the winners.
"It keeps happening year after year and it's not a fluke. He keeps it so simple, there's never any targets he just keeps them running. The Horses are happy and winning from March to December, which is some achievement."
He broke the British record when he celebrated the success of his 217th under charge at Wolverhampton. 2011 became the fourth time that the genius of his profession won the trainers’ championship. He came at par with what the accomplished trainer,
Mark Johnston had achieved, as Numeral brought back for Richard Hannon the 216th victory that previously was the benchmark for Mark Johnston.
His unflinching dedication to his work not for winning the championship but for serving his profession with true dedication has got him the honour time and again.
