Trainer Mick Channon aiming for his first American victory with Nayarra in the American Oaks
Trainer Mick Channon has an opportunity to run his charge, Nayarra, in the Grade 1 American Oaks, scheduled to take place on 14th July, 2012.
The mega-event covers a distance of 1 ¼ miles and, will take place at the Betfair Hollywood Park.
Since, Channon first started training horses in 1990 he has gained recognition with several victories in Europe and Canada but, now it is his golden opportunity to score in the United States.
Regarding his three-year-old filly, the trainer stated:
“She’s not the biggest, but she’s got a big heart,” he commented. “This should be perfect.”
Over the course of her career, the daughter of Cape Cross, foaled by mare Massarra, has scored one victory, finished five times as a runner-up and twice in third place.
Now, it is time for the bay filly to step up her game and, aim for the second victory of her career.
Owned by Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, the young runner’s victory was commendable, since it came in the Group 1 category.
Mounted by rider, Martin Dwyer, she finished half-length ahead of Rosa Eglanteria in the Premio Gran Criterium at San Siro in October, 2011.
In the Investec Oaks at Epsom, the filly completed the order of finish and, according to the trainer, this was because she could not perform over the large distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs.
Over the years, Mick Channon’s runners have demonstrated superior racing ability and they seem to get better with every race. All of this is because of his experience and immaculate training methods.
The trainer has avoided bringing his runners to the United States but, if things go well with Nayarra, he might consider making these changes as he said:
“If it works, we wouldn’t mind traveling again.” He further commented: “We’re putting our toe in the water, anyway.”
Nayarra is one of the runners being shipped from the United Kingdom, the other being Miss Cato, who is under the wing of trainer, Rae Guest.
Other competitors in this line-up include John Sadler trained, Lady Of Shamrock, and Michael Matz’s charge, Colonial Flag.
