Trainer Robert Garcia praises Brandon Rios – Boxing News
Brandon Rios can be former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent, following the former’s knockout victory over Mike Alvarado. Brandon Rios is an unbeaten fighter who is being considered as the next big thing in the world of boxing after
Pacquiao. Moreover, his trainer, Robert Garcia believes Rios has all the capabilities to ‘pull off a surprise’ against the eight division titleholder Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao currently stands with 54 wins, 4 losses, 2 ties and 38 knockouts in his portfolio. On the other hand, Rios stands with 31 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie and 23 knockouts in his portfolio. Considering Rios his win over Alvarado, Garcia is expecting an upset
if the unbeaten fighter locks horn with Pacquiao.
Even Rios is confident that he has all the tools to defeat Pacquiao in the ring.
“You see what happened to Mike Alvarado? I think I could do the same thing to them, too. Mike Alvarado, I think, he hits harder than them and he's more tougher,” said Rios during the post fight interview.
“Pacquiao's an in and out guy. But you know what? Like I always do, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. taught me very well. Break the body down and the head will fall down,” he added.
However, Robert Garcia put a period to the speculations of Pacquiao vs. Rios, saying the Filipino pride needs to defeat Juan Manuel Marquez first in order to get a shot at Rios.
“The fact that Brandon is being mentioned doesn't mean that the fight is going to happen, so they both have their own managers. We're not 100 percent that it's going to happen,” said Robert Garcia.
Pacquiao is currently scheduled to face Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time. Their last fight was held in 2011, and even though Pacquiao won, he was booed by the crowd since the decision was too close. For many, Marquez had won the showdown.
Now, Pacquiao is hoping to knockout Marquez in order to grab a dominant win against Marquez, something he has not scored yet, even though he has beaten the Mexican twice.
