Training a horse to do well everything?

Hi, well i know how to train a foal. Well the halter breaking in and everything, feet pick up, coming, and the simple stuff. My uncle will be breaking in my foal whenever i decided to breed my mare.

Anyways. well one of his mares isnt broken in at all. And she is about 5 now. I can easily train her to put the halter one, follow, and act calm. But i would love to teach her to ride. What are some tips you have used to teach your horse to ride. She has never ever had a saddle on her, but have had people sit on her. And lean on her back. I would of course longe her before doing anything with the saddle.

  1. If you don't have the experience don't do it. It will save you alot of hassle in the long run.

Your best bet would be to watch someone break a horse, then help them break a horse, then (while they are there) have them instruct you through the process. Once you know you understand it, go back. look at different methods, see if you can go to clinics where trainers are working young horses, just don't limit your self to the first way you learn.

Once you really feel that you have it down, I would just start with a extreamly green horse. The ones that have only four or five rides on them. From there you can work your way down to being able to break horses on your own.

Just remember to stay relaxed, set a goal, but don't rush yourself or the horse.

Really I would much rather see a trainer working with a horse two weeks walking only and the horse turn out right, then a trainer working with a horse and trotting on the first ride and the horse coming out rushed.

It all goes down to the horse, some need more time to learn than others, others pick it up after the first few tries.

  2. Some tips? Don't try to break a 5 year old yourself. I have been riding for over 20 years and STILL do not consider myself experienced enough to start a horse. Being the one to lay the foundation on a horse is not a walk in the park and i wouldn't be at all surprised if you or this horse got seriously injured or worse during the process.

Children should NOT be breaking horses. No exception. Even if you were an amazing rider I would advice against it. I know you'll throw a hissy fit and say 'well I'm going to anyway!' to me.... But if you saw the things I've seen when young kids try to 'break' young horses.... You'd run and hide under your bed at the thought of doing it.

  3. What you should do is ask your uncle if you can work with him to train her.  He can show you what he's doing, explain to you what he's doing and work with you on your technique.

Training a horse is much like parenting.  You have to be firm, kind, consistent and reasonable.  There should be a lot of repetition involved so that every new thing becomes commonplace for the horse, and its a lot more work than you think.

  4. Hi! Well you can start by saddling her and longing her with the saddle, It will get her used to the flapping of the stirrups and moving with the saddle on her back. I would do that for atleast week or so everyday. Then I would have her tied to a nice sturdy pole and get on and off of her getting her used to pressure in the stirrups and on her back, like  i said try that for another week or so. After that i would get help from someone who trains horses, but that right there is some things you can do to help her come along and be easier for the trainer when it comes time to ride. But remember these things take time, be gentle and create a good relationship with the horse.

  5. if u dont know then dont even try you will probabaly ruin her...breaking a horse should be reserved for the pro's

no offence but its the truth
