Training event horses?

I'm going to study horse management, then uni.

But after that, how do i go about my career? I want to train event horses, but where shall i start?

Answers would be preferred from someone who does make a living out of training event horses please. And any other tips would be great.

Thank you :)

  1. If I were you, I would call some event trainers.  They could give you best advice.

  2. I work in the H/J industry now, but I did a year program for an event barn when I was just starting out. I was a working student with about four other girls on property. I got paid a nominal salary, but the real benefit of the program was the experience I got. I rode four to eight horses a day, and had the opportunity to compete them at horse trials and dressage and jumper shows. I made some great contacts, and the program was intense. The head trainer said even though working students were supposed to make a year commitment, about half dropped out after the first month or so.

If you seriously want to pursue this career, I recommend a working student or resident student program. Even though you won't make much, the connections you make if you stick it out could help you land a better paying job later. Consider it an internship. Find the best barn and trainer you can, and work as hard as you possibly can. I pulled 13 and 14 hour workdays six days a week when I was in that position.

I've heard great things about Bascule Farms in Maryland. They do a resident student program similar to what I did, with plenty of emphasis on improving yourself and bettering your riding. There's also a lot of opportunities to compete. And success in competition is one of the best ways to establish yourself as a trainer.
