I will be starting at a gym next week, training for competitive fighting, any advice you can throw my way?

I have not done any MMA, I have done kickboxing though.

What should I focus on the most starting out... Should I keep doing a lot of weight training?

Anything at all you can throw my way I will greatly appreciate ;-)

  1. Put  a lot of focus on conditioning-that will be your greatest weapon, or downfall, depending on your program

  2. Speed, speed, speed! It's one thing you can't have too much of in a fight.

Learn to grapple - I believe kickboxing has little or no floor techniques, and this will be important.

  3. Weight training definitely won't hurt, but shift your focus primarily to cardio.  Do a variety...alternate between jogging/sprinting, jumping rope, swimming, shadow boxing, etc.  The best way to get your cardio up to fight is to fight a lot...train whenever you can.  Make sure the gym you are training at covers both stand-up and ground games extensively and allows you to spar frequently. Any other specific questions, feel free to shoot me an email!

Also, check out www.fightergirls.com  - it's a great resource for female fighters!

    Good luck!
