Training for a route driving job. What do I talk about while we're driving?

I have a route sales driving job I'm starting on Monday. Training takes 1-2 months depending on how fast I pick it up. I'm not concerned about the actual job, but more so about spending 8-10 hours a day in a truck with my trainer. I'm naturally a shy person and I fear there will be lots of awkward silence in the next 2 months. I will ask lots of questions, but you can only ask so many questions. If this guy isn't a very outgoing person, it could be very awkward. What do you guys think? Have any suggestions?

  1. I think the conversation will take care of itself.  If he's not very outgoing, he'll be fine with silence.  You can just say up front that you're normally shy and don't talk much, it will help him to understand why you don't talk much.

  2. Dont worry about making small talk. He is going to be evaluating you on your driving .  Conversation distracts people, its best to show that your full concentration is on driving.  If you must make small talk, pick his brain for information that may help you in the future. Such as, the best route to travel, the traffic conditions at certain times of the day in the areas where you will be driving. You may also want to inquire about road hazards and traffic statistics. Knowing these things about a road traveled often will greatly reduce your accident risk. And make you look concerned and attentive to problems.

  3. I am sure that is something that happens all the time.  I believe you have nothing to worrie about.  Start small talk.  Ask if he has any stories about driving a truck.  You will think of something.  Good luck.
