Question:

Training for jogging/walking a 10K in 4 weeks?

I am a beginning jogger (5 weeks jog/walking) and have signed up to do a 10K in four weeks. I'm not planning to run the whole 6.5 miles. I currently run a 12 minute mile. Is it frowned upon to walk some of the race? What would be a reasonable training plan to follow? I'm a bit nervous- but just want to FINISH.

  1. Normally no it's not bad to walk but some races do have a time limit so I would check to see if they do and if you could be under that. I would say you should have no problem with a 12 pace as your running pace but it would depend on how much you plan to walk and what restrictions the race you've chosen has on time limit. When you go from running to walking before you stop to walk just move over some as to not trip anyone running behind you. The 10k's are 6.2 miles. I hope you do great. A lot of people run walk races up to a Marathon, like I said it just depends on their time limits. They have those to help keep the cost down due to police help and other things to do with traffic , not because they don't want walkers. Good luck and enjoy your race.

  2. are you running in the Nikeplus Human Race??

if so, all of the streets will be closed down for only a certain amount of time, as they can't keep traffic shut down forever.

trust me, you have PLENTY of time to finish the race. if you are running in the Nikeplus Human Race, you should keep a pace of at least 13 minutes per mile from when the LAST person crosses the start line. which means that if you are somewhere in the middle of the groups that start the race, you can walk the whole race and finish without any trouble.

if you are the very last person to cross the starting line, and you can't keep a 13 minute per mile pace, they won't kick you out of the race :)

they just kindly ask you to finish the race on the sidewalk and obey all traffic signals.

if you are not running in the Nikeplus Human Race on August 31st, then you should be!

even if you aren't, these are the general rules with most 10k's, half and full marathons.

    good luck!
