Question:

Training with a Limited Air Supply?

As a runner, I have an exceptional cardiovascular system. I would however like to improve on it. I've heard of a technique where you work out with a snorkel, or some sort of device that limits the amount of air you can take in at one time. So I had a few questions I wanted answered about this:

-Assuming that I don't push myself to the point of loosing consciousness, is this safe?

-Is this technique effective?

-What are the pros and cons of using a device to limit my air supply?

-Is this technique worth the effort (do the pros outweigh the cons)?

Thanks in advance. This will prove very helpful.

  1. Don't waste your time.  Restricting air intake will not make you a better runner. It will just limit how hard you can train.  For example, how can you do a VO2Max workout if you can not achieve your VO2Max?  The current theory with altitude training is live at altitude but train at sea level. But really, have you truly exhausted current training techniques (mileage, intervals, tempo runs etc)?  Even altitude training isn't necessary until you are trying to get the last 1%.

  2. i wouldnt train with a snorkel that might be a bit embarrassing

  3. so you don't look like a complete idiot...train with a mouth guard instead. it still limits the amount of air supply you get and it doesn't look half as dorky! trust me it does work though!!
