On checking train times, I find that the FIRST train from my local station, Abbey Wood, Kent, is 07:16 arriving at Marlow at 10:00. How does the government expect people to use the train when they start so late in the day.

  1. To be fair, I doubt if there are hordes of people wanting to travel from Abbey Wood to Marlow in the rush hour. From Paddington to Marlow you are running against the rush, so the greater numbers of trains from Maidenhead/Marlow will be into London, timed to get commuters to work on time. Railways, unfortunately, are not taxis running to the precise timetable of one individual, but tailored to provide the maximum anumber of seats at times of highest demand. This has always been the case, and really, however much one deprecate the actions of Dr. Beeching, Mrs Thatcher and John Major, nothing to do with them.

However, your research is incorrect. There is a train before the 7.16. There is one from Abbey Wood at 6.07, arriving Marlow at 8.35. I doubt if many people want to travel before 6am.

  2. Thank Dr Beeching, Lady Thatcher and John (grey) Major for their WONDERFUL input to this country's public transport system - you should be grateful you even HAVE a local railway station!!!!
