  1. There are a few trains a day which do not require travel through London - the 10.40 from Newcastle, change Basingstoke, the 11.25 and the 15.22, change Bristol Temple Meads

There are many more via London - for details check the site below.

  2. You are going to have to change at least once because there is no direct service.

There is a Cross Country service which leaves Newcastle at 09.35am, change at Bristol Temple Meads, total journey time about 7 hours. Means you avoid London.

Most of the other journeys involve 2 or more changes.

  3. www.thetrainline.com

But the website doesn't decide if it goes direct or not, it may just be the case it can't be done due to the operators.

  4. i like eggs

  5. So many train on those lines  little to worry about if you do get lost

  6. I very much doubt if there's a direct Newcastle-Portsmouth service. However, it can probably be done with only one change, at either Birmingham or Bristol. You wouldn't normally want to travel to Portsmouth via Bristol because you'd be going well out of your way but it might give you the fewest changes.

Try TheTrainLine because it has discounted tickets and lets you view routes before you choose which one to buy.

  7. There's a train from Aberdeen - Bournemouth which would involve 1 change and cut out Bristol.

    Won't be cheap though.

Its a Virgin service. Virgin on the ridiculous when it comes to paying.

  8. There is no direct service, change at Winchester or in London or Bristol.

  9. Crosscountry http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/ run from Newcastle to Bournemouth via Southampton

This is probably preferable to changing in London.

It's the old Virgin Cross country route that was re-franchised by Arriva last year.

    Route map here:- http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/Site...

  10. Im not sure if you could catch a train and have no changes. I found one that had one change but no less than that. Im pretty sure the one i found the change was at Bristol? :)

  11. 99% sure you need to change.

    You would from Scotland.

    edit: why the thumbs down?

You would need to change trains Edinburgh to Plymouth - and the first train would pass through Newcastle.

  12. There is no direct service at all.  You will have to change trains somewhere.  The easiest route is into Kings Cross - Underground to Waterloo - To Portsmouth.

Check to make sure there are no Enginering works, especially on the Waterloo - Portsmouth route as there is a longterm weekend engineering going on along the South Coast of Hampshire and Sussex until at least 2009 with disruption in multiple places.

    Good Luck
