Tram system - japan?

Question

I was discussing different methods with friends about the U.S> and their elimination of coal as fuel. I was wondering if Japan is doing alright, since I heard hardly anyone drives. Some bike, but most use the tram. What does it run on?

Subway network in Tokyo is efficient transportation. It's run by electric power.
