  1. Tramadol does not contain morphine. It is a nonopiod analgesic (pain reliever) that binds to the same pain receptors as other opiates such as morphine, codeine, ect.

Tramadol dose not contain codeine. Codeine is an opiate. Tramadol is a nonopiate analgesic.

Mark Connel2001 is mistaken. Tramadol is not an opiate. It is a synthetic analog of codeine (which is an opiate).

  2. I would like to give you complete information to understand the myriad answers you are getting, as most people do not understand tramadol and where it falls in the spectrum of pain medications. This is mostly due to disinformation provided in part by the pharmaceutical industry, and partly on a lack of fully understanding the pharmacology of the medication itself.

Desite, MarkConnell's assertions that he studies medications, I study pain medications, as it is the class I precribe most frequently, he is unfortunatly in error regaring some of his assertations.  Dr. Frank, as usual is quite correct.

Tramadol is a centrally acting synthetic opiate analgesic (pain relief) medication. Thus it is an opioid and therefore a narcotic. Narcotic refers to opium, opium derivatives, and their semi-synthetic or fully synthetic substitutes. Tramadol contains neither morphine nor codeine, it is fully synthetic, much as methadone is a fully synthetic opioid medication. It still has potential for abuse, and has significant withdrawal issues in long term use if the patient is not tapered off the medication properly.

However, it does provide pan relief in many patients. 45% of patients studied received minimal or no relief when taking this medication. In patients in which tramadol is effective a 50mg oral dose provides a similar level of relief as 5 mg of oral morphine sulfate.

  3. tramadol is a opium based drug. so no morphine

  4. Tramadol does not contain morphine as such, it is in fact a morphine analogue.

  5. there is no morphine in tramadol. it has some codeine in it and thats all, it isnt very strong at all.

  6. Brad - Sorry, while tramadol does not contain morphine it IS an opioid.  It is an atypical, fully synthetic opioid.  Opioid does not mean that it is a narcotic, it simply means that it is a chemical substance that has a morphine-like action in the body.
