Tramping -- Huts Versus Tent?

I'll be moving in New Zealand in September on a working holiday visa. I'll be there for a year, and during my stay I plan on doing a lot of hiking/tramping. I have an opportunity to buy an affordable, lightweight Kelty brand tent, but I'm not sure if I need it.

Is it a better value to pay for the huts or to bring along your own tent? Are there any tracks that don't have many huts?

I would use both. The weather can still be cold in September, October and even December sometimes.
