Question:

Tranny Swap in 1996 Chevy Pickup?

Buddy of mine has a 96 chevy 1500 4x4. The transmission is shot now, it has a 4L60E, and he found one almost new out of a newer model 2000 something, but its out of a 2x4. Is this swap possible? Or will something have to be changed first? Or not possible at all? Thanks

  1. I believe the torque converter and input shaft are different on the LSX engined truck transmission.

  2. it is not possible. the ls based motors use a  different input shaft on the trans. it is not possible.

  3. Even though the 4L60E has been around for a while, it went through a re-design in 2000 or 2001, in which they added some additional computer components. Trying to place it in a 96 Silverado isn't going to be possible as the 1996 computer will not be able to translate the data correctly.

I would try to find out what an R&R kit would cost through the local auto parts store. Usually the hard parts are a lot cheaper than trying to get a brand new transmission from the dealer or other retailer. Of course you would need to have the proper tools and knowledge to do this. If you do not, then try going to a junkyard and locate one.
