Is there any way to travel from America to Europe by ship that doesn't envolve luxury cruising? A one way trip, inside?

  1. Most of the cruise lines offer transAtlantic and repositioning cruises.  Take a look at

    http://www.vacationstogo.com/?source=goo... for deals.

A couple years ago, we fly to Italy and cruised from Rome (Civitaveccia) to Ft. Lauderdale.  Ports included Monte Carlo, Malaga Spain, Funchal Portugal, 5 days at sea, Bermuda, Nassau, and finally Ft. Lauderdale.  It was FABULOUS.  A crossing can be so relaxing.

  2. Well, there are cruise ships that aren't in the industry's definition of "luxury".  That doesn't mean they're cheap, though.  Expect to spend at least $150 per person, per day, with two people in a cabin.

Look for trans-Atlantic repositioning cruises, which mainly happen in April (when ships are moving to Europe for the summer season).

Or you could look into freighters, which are cheaper and a lot less luxurious. http://www.dmoz.org/Recreation/Travel/Sp... and click on "freighters and barges"

    Hope that helps.

  3. I'm taking the Carnival Freedom for a transatlantic (repositioning) cruise in April of next year. It goes from Ft Lauderdale to Rome. Cost was $1300 per person for a balcony room.(14 day cruise) I believe insides are going for around 800. Actually these cruises are much  less expensive due to the small number of ports vs sea days. They also need to get the ship on the other side of the Atlantic and full is better than empty.
