  1. The best collection of maps of the Transcontinental Railroad is at "www.cprr.org/maps"

Both railroads had "slave" like working conditions, but the Union Pacific had financial problems. They were trying to build as fast and as cheaply as possible, which caused many labor problems with their mixed work force. Their main interest was to just build something, and soon most of the line had to be rebuilt..The Central Pacific's work force was predominately Chinese and Irish so they worked together in a more cooperative manner. They were trying to build trackage that would last.

  2. Read the wikipedia article for starters...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Trans...

  3. The line is intact and still on maps.  You can follow it on Yahoo! maps. http://maps.yahoo.com/ (rural satellite photos seem better than Google maps, and the maps seem to show railroads better).

    Except:

    1. Between Lucin and Ogden, they moved the routing, you can see traces on the sat photos but that's about it.

    2. Maps won't call the railroad Central Pacific!

Central Pacific soon changed their name to Southern Pacific, which they stayed until 1996.

The Union Pacific is alive and well.  They bought the Southern Pacific in 1996.

As a result, you still see engines like this around:

And, maps will show the Central Pacific route as SP or UP.   Most of the other railroads in that area are also SP and UP, so it can get a little confusing.

Nice book on the building of it:
