Transfer News: Chelsea sign Benfica defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542
Recent reports suggested that Chelsea and Benfica could not formulate a deal for transfer of Luiz, but updates confirm that Benfica have moved into the final phase for a transfer for the Brazilian defender.
The initial demand made by Benfica’s president, Luis http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Filipe-c13764 Vieira was 30 million Euros; however, Chelsea kept their offer to 25 million. But now Vieira has lowered the demand to 28 million and the Premier League side has agreed upon the deal.
The defender joined EC Vitoria, a Brazilian football club back in 2005. Initially playing as a defensive midfielder, Luiz couldn’t adapt to the position and performed poorly in the mid-field. However, later he was sent on the field in central defence and
proved to be a good defender, settling well for the Brazilian club.
The early days in Benfica were on a loan transfer for the full-back, but due to his good defending, he was awarded a five year contract for the club. Over the years, Luiz has proved his skill by being a consistent performer in the defence lines, and also
his ever availability due to his great physical strength and fitness. The defender's best performance was during the last season; he appeared in all 49 official matches for the Reds, with 4206 minutes on the field and scored 3 crucial goals. The Reds won the
league title after 5 years.
Chelsea would be counting on the Brazilian defender to justify his price tag and hoping that, through his performances, he cements his place in the Chelsea back-four. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Abel-Xavier-c3433 commenting on the transfer news said,
“I have no doubt that David would be a great success at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786. First of all, he is a very good defender, but he is also comfortable on the ball and would contribute a lot, in terms of turning defence into attack.”
Even though the fullback is already a star, he is still improving and developing as he is gaining more experience. Chelsea is not a bad place for the defender to be at, considering the side is slowly turning to winning ways after their slump. The ageing
Chelsea squad might lack that edge on the field, but the experience of Terry and co. will surely prove priceless for Luiz to learn from.
