  1. 2.5" drive enclosure will work fine.

  2. Yes 2.5 is right and yes you can take your laptop hard drive put it inside a usb case and make it an external drive on another computer.

I hope your laptop hard drive is not whats dead, then it wouldnt work LOL.

Your hard drive connection is most likely SATA 3.

  3. Yes.. you need a 2.5 PATA drive shuttle.

Toshiba Satellite M40 Specifications (as reviewed):

    Intel Pentium-M 760 (2.0Ghz, 533Mhz FSB)

    1GB RAM (2x 512MB DDR400)

    60GB (PATA 100 5400Rpm, 8mb Cache)

15.4" Widescreen TruBrite' Glossy display (1280x800 native)

    NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 128mb PCI-Express

    Intel Pro 2195 a/b/g Wireless

    Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-8315 (DVD-RAM, +R / + - RW)

    Microsoft Windows XP Professional (SP2)

    Toshiba 6.1 Hour Li-Ion Battery (6 cell; 4300mAh)

I use this to transfer hard drive data:

It can connect a SATA (2.5 or 3.5) or PATA (2.5 or 3.5) hard drive to the USB 2.0 bus.  I use Acronis software to clone or backup the drive.

Here's a cheap external enclosure that you can put your PATA 2.5 drive in from your Toshiba laptop.
