Question:

Transfering a Car title?

I live in GA. My dad gave me the title to the car he bought me back in college. He signed it over to me, but I never transfered the title to my name. Is it necessary for me to do that before I can trade or sell the car?

  1. You should have transferred it when Dad gave it to you.  You have been illegal ever since.  You should transfer it now.  You cannot sell a car that is not titled in your name.  The maiden name business should be no problem, just show the DMV your marriage license.  I don't know if there will be consequences to you for not previously registering the car.

  2. Yes you have to do that first.

  3. Yes, you must transfer the title to your name before selling it since your name has been written on the title. When signing the title and giving a bill of sale to the buyer, you can use your maiden name but use it everywhere.
