Okay i have a desktop at home and a laptop for work. So what i do is go to work and write a few articles and lectures but then i want to transfer them on my desktop and i dont want to use a usb stick or a shared folder what i was hopping to do is connect an ethernet cable from my desktop to my laptop and make some sort of bridge connection not for interenet use but for file sharing.

Also my old hard drive is dying and want to move all the info onto my laptop using the technik i was saying.

so my question is how do i do this ?

  1. Hi,

    If you just want to connect the two pc's i think you need a crossover cable not a straight through ethernet cable, then all you need to do is setup a network. You can only share things through the network using a shared folder but it can be easy to get and i will  tell you how to do this.

    Firstly what operating system are you using? I will guess that its windows xp, if not e-mail me and i'll try to help.

    If its xp all you need to do is click;

    start

    my computer

    in the left hand navigation click my network places

    then in the left hand navigation click setup a home or small office network, follow the wizard and leave everything as default.

    Then repeat the steps on the other pc and then your network is setup, restart both pc's.

    Once they're restarted then on the pc go to my documents, create a new folder and call it what you like, this will be shared and allow you to share files. Once the new folder is created, then right click and click sharing, give it a name and the folder will then be shared on the network.

    In order to access it go onto the laptop and click;

    start

    my network places

    in the left hand navigation click view network computers

    then double click the other pc and then in the folder which opens then the shared folder will be in there, then just right click it and click map network drive, this will place a shortcut in my computer and allow you to share files between the two pc's.

  2. The best and quickest way is transfer them on to a few CD-RW discs and do it that way.

    I just borrowed a couple from a mate of mine to do it, because I didn't have enough. After I finished with them I just wiped them clean afterwards before I gave them back.

    Saves all the hassle of network cards blah, blah, blah.
