Transfering out of state Driver license to Texas after the 30 day period?

I moved to Texas more than a month back. My out of state driver license is un-expired. Can I transfer it to a Texas Driver License, given that the 30 day period has gone past ? If yes, will I be required to pass a driving test as well ? Are there any penalties the DMV will impose for doing this after the 30-day period ?

  1. You go to the local DPS office, pay the $26, tell them you have only been here for 2 weeks if they ask (they have no way to check), bring some proof of new address, and they take your out of state liscense. They do check to make sure you have no out of state warrants or pending child support. If you have any of that they arrest you on the spot. Also, if you have not paid any land taxes onany property you own in Texas you cannot renew your liscense.

You should keep your out of State liscense as long as you can, because once you get the Texas liscense you have to register any Texas car you have with Texas plates within 30 days. If you don't you can't lie about that because they know how long you have been in Texas after you get your new Liscense.

Good Luck, there's no written or driving test, just a transfer that needs proof of new address and proof of insurance. Even if you don't own a car, you have to have insurance.

  2. Yes, no problem.

As far as I know there are no penalties, other than the fact that you can't drive between when the 30 days run out and when  you transfer it.

  3. As far as I know, I think all that you need to do is go to your local Texas DPS office and change your address and DL to Texas.  They never asked me exactly how many days it had been when I changed my DL to a TX DL.

  4. I moved to Texas a year ago and my 30 days passed.  They did not make me take a driving test.  You just have to get your car inspected first, then go transfer your title, then finally go get your new liscense.  They will take your old liscense away from you (I wanted to keep mine).  But no tests, and no fees.

  5. The same case happened to me too. I was moved in from California 3 months ago. I suggest you to go to your nearest DPS office and ask them you want driving license in this state. They wont ask you any question like when did you come to TX. You dont have to give any test but the only thing you have to do is to surrender your current out of state license. If you have any vehicle under your name you have to register your vehicle first in any court house or tax office.
