Question:

Transfering ownership in California Process Question?

So I just bought a car, I got the pink slip, and filled out the stuff on the back. I think I need to get a smog check too so I'm going to do that tomorrow, is there anything else I need to do? I'm also going to choose to get another licenses plate, not a custom one but another one. In California, would I need proof of insurance like policy number and everything before I'm able to register the car? Would I need anything else other than smog, pink slip, bringing the licenses plate.

Also, would I get the plates and registration and everything on the spot?

  1. You are on the right track.

Yes, proof of insurance will be needed. It will need to show the company, poicy # and the VIN.

Specality plates may not be available at the DMV so you may have to order them. They will do that and then you get them in the mail.
