I would like to spend my first year in Kamloops, BC at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) to begin my degree in Business. The year later I was thinking about transfering to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia (UBC) to continue my degree in Business. Is this a good idea? Is it possible? How do I go doing so? Is it hard? My uncle is saying the first year will be a waste of money. Is he right? someone please help me. The deadline for UBC is already over so I couldn't attend now anyway. i am an average student.

  1. I don't know anything about TRU. I know lots of people who have transferred after their first year of university or college, however. I think it is fair to say that it is always "possible". There are two things to consider:

    1. How likely are you to get into UBC after your year at TRU? Will you have to apply to UBC from scratch, or will your year at TRU give you a leg up on admissions?

    2. Will you get transfer credit for all your courses?

You can get the answers to these questions by calling or emailing UBC and TRU. Try TRU first, and ask if anyone has transferred before.

As for whether or not you will be wasting your money, this is kind of subjective. First-year courses tend to be the same everywhere, at least for the average student. I would worry a little bit about being isolated after transferring to UBC, since first year is the best time to meet people.
