Transferring data from a sanmax to my laptop...

I borrowed my nephew's sanmax portable harddrive to transfer some of his programs onto my laptop. He left for Europe before I could find out how to transfer the data. I have no idea what to do. Nothing comes up that says download or transfer or anything like that. Can you help me figure this out? I certainly don't want to mess anything up. My operating system is Vista premium. Thanks for any help, Lindy
