My husband and I were planning to move to Flordia next year... but he's saying his job can refuse to transfer him over to another location.

We're from Indiana and he works for the biggest hotel company out there. Of course, the hotel company has locations in every state. He has worked there 10 years and has a very good standing with the company. We wanted to have him transfer over to Florida but he's saying the management here can now refuse his request because they want to keep him at the location here. Can they do this?

  1. Yes, they can do this.  It's not a very nice business practice to refuse something that would make an employee happy, but it is their company and they can choose to transfer whoever, whenever they want.

If his company is really refusing his transfer because they don't want to lose him, I suggest starting to look for another job.  If he's that good, he will find another great hotel company to work for.

I used to work for a company that would do this.  They would readily transfer the bad employees (lazy, bad work record, etc) just so that those employees would become someone else's problem.  If you were good at your job, you would not get a transfer no matter what the circumstances (ie wanting to move closer to family). Anyone who questioned the unfair practices would find themselves without a job at all. Trust me -- if they have unethical business practices in THIS aspect, they will be unethical in other aspects.

  2. YES, and it can happen for a longggggggg time, if he's well liked there, a good employee, and they want him to stay.

Happened to a friend of mine, she ended up staying in the (1)

spot 15 years, and finally went to school for another trade, and had to quit her job...........they were Never going to let her go.  Same situation, many other companies in other states.

good luck to you.hope all turns out well

  3. Yes.

  4. Bad business practice but perfectly legal unless they are trying to keep him from transferring because of his race, color, religion, s*x, national origin, disability or age (if 40+).
