Transferring video from camcorder to computer. HELP!!?

Me and some of my friends are going to make a short movie and we have a camcorder to film it on but i tried to upload a test video to the computer and it won't work. We have a Sony Handycam camcorder that uses the mini DVD's to record on. Can you tell me how to get the video onto my computer. We need to upload it to YouTube and edit it on the computer! When I put the DVD in the computer's DVD drive, it doesn't even come up as being there. Help please! Thank you!

finalize the dvd on the camcorder before you put it in the computer's dvd drive.  the thing is, the movies will come ou in .vob and you would need a converter before you will be able to edit that.

if the camcorder has a usb port, try to connect it to the computer and accessing the camcorder like a removable drive.  with this method, you would be able to copy the mpeg files without finalizing the disc and without the need for converting the movies to get them ready for editing.
