Question:

Transition to a big girl bed??

When did you toddler transition to a toddler bed or bed with rails? My 13 month old still sleeps in her crib, but #2 baby is on the way. I want to get her transitioned prior to baby's arrival.

Also, my daughter doesn't sleep w/ a blanket. She is a very active sleeper and will end up at the opposite end of the bed backwards:o). Do you have any recommendations for how to help her stay under a blanket?

When did your toddler start using a pillow? Mine doesn't sleep w/ one...just b/c we haven't offered one. Is there a certain kind for toddlers/young children?

Any advice would be great!!

  1. I switched my daughter at 2yrs 8months...

I highly recommend waiting till she's older.  She is a bit young to learn to stay in the bed.  You should just buy another crib.

  2. I was in the same predicament and did not want to buy a second crib. I put my son in a big bed at 14 months old. I just put some side rails up that i got from Babies R US. My son is very active aswell, but i noticed as he got older he would use a blanket, especially when he had a big bed, because the blankets were always placed on the bed. My son still doesn't always use a pillow. He likes ones that are thin and very soft.

  3. I put my daughter in a big bed around 18mos when she climbed out of her crib. I put a twin mattress on the floor and she sleeps on that so if she does fall off, its like 6 inches off the floor..lol..My daughter sleeps with a pillow and a blanket. Just put the blanket on her when she goes to bed and check on her again before you go to bed and put it back over her if she is cold. If she gets cold in the night she will grab it.

Good luck on the transition. I thought it would be hard but she loved her bed the very first night and hasnt given me one problem with it at all!

  4. She is still way to young to go into a "big girl" bed...the fact that she rolls all over the crib and doesn't stay under a blanket should tell you that she could roll out of a bed and hurt herself.

Also, you DO NOT want her able to get out of her bed and go wandering in the night, while you are in the shower, etc.   She could get into real trouble and hurt herself--or the new baby.

Kids make the transition between 2-4 years old, depending upon the child.  I suggest you invest in a convertible crib, one that can be made into a child's bed later...and then just use two cribs for now...and transition to the bed when your daughter is older.

As far as the pillow, she doesn't really need one, and it is a possible suffocation hazard...she seems like a real little bundle of energy!  Also, with the blankets, they should be lightweight, with no fluffy comforters...you can always put her in blanket sleepers, which elminate the need for a blanket!

Good luck with two in diapers--I don't envy you that!

  5. 2-3 years

  6. hello, all toddlers at one stage will fall out of bed even with one them rails as they move all over ,what i used to bo was put a blanket on the floor just in case they did tumble ,if your worried she will get cold through the night kickin off her blanket make surre she has a nice pair a pjs on and as for the pillow what i used to do put it under th sheet i used the fitted sheets so this would keep the pillow in place nothing too big and bouncy just a thin one to start, but good luck in the transition, good luck with your new baby too, best to do before the new addition comes x

  7. I put my oldest in a toddler bed at a year old because he started acting like he was going to climb out of his crib, the first week in a big boy bed was rough lots of up and down but he got use to it very quick. At 13 months she should be ready just be prepared to possibly temporarily interrupt that sleep pattern.
