Transitions Championship: Jeff Overton fires a five-under par 66 in the final round to tie for fifth – Golf News
The American Jeff Overton fired a five under-par 66 in the final round of the Transitions Championship to finish tied for the fifth position at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Overton started off his round with a four-stroke deficit against the overnight leaders, Jim Furyk and Retief Goosen, at a seven-under par overall score.
Six holes later, he was at 11-under par, thanks to the four birdies he carded. Another birdie on the par-five 11th took him to the top of the leaderboard at that time.
A few minutes later, Jim Furyk again increased his lead with a birdie on the 11th to go 14-under par.
However, a bogey-birdie on the 15th and 16th holes forced him to stay at 12-under par 272 tournament score.
In the meantime, three players, namely Luke Donald, Sang-Moon Bae and Robert Garrigus, also joined Jim Furyk on the top position to force the game into the playoffs.
Thereafter, Donald birdied the very first hole in the playoffs to register his first victory of the 2012 golf season.
Overton succeeded in hitting a total of 17 greens, along with nine fairways out of 13. It recorded 75 per cent of the Greens in Regulations.
According to Overton, he could have joined the players who competed in the playoffs if he could have avoided the only bogey he made in the final round.
Yet, he looked pleased with his performance and said that he was consistent in scoring under par scores throughout the event.
As a result, he remained in contention for the top position till the end of the final round. Therefore, it is a pleasure for him to record his first top-10 finish of the current season.
Overton has participated in seven tournaments so far on the 2012 PGA Tour season and made the cuts six times in total. His position also marked his third top-25 finish of the year.
After a successful week, he will now head to Bay Hill Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, to participate in the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, scheduled to start from March 22, 2012.
