Question:

Transitions lenses or sunglasses?

I'm trying to decide on whether or not I should get transitions. My dad has them and says they don't do much for sunlight.

Are transitions worth the money, in terms of sunlight protection? Or should I just get prescription sunglasses?

  1. I do not see them as an "either/or" thing. I have patients that get their regular glasses with transitions and then a pair of sunglasses for driving and bright situations. The Transitions are great for going in and out and have the ability to keep you comfortable in your regular glasses, but they are not a substitute for a good sunglass if you need better glare protection, especially since the Transitions do not get dark in the car. So, I say BOTH>

  2. Transitions will not work in the car.  They r lighter than sunglasses so if your photophobic (light sensitive) then you need to get sunglasses.  Transitions are nice cuz it liberates you from having to switch from clear to sun rx.  Its up to you.  Which ever you prefer...

  3. I agree with Kimzy.  I have transition lens now and I LOVE them.  I have had Rx sunglasses and they are  bothersome to take off and put on and trade off when you don't need them  Transitions may not get as dark as some sunglasses but it is worth every $ that you have spent.  The best part is that it isn't as expensive as an average pair of sunglasses.  You save money because you are not buying another set a frames and the prescription lens.

Most of the time, I don't know that my lens have darkened.

Go with transition lens.  You will love it.

  4. PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES. I've tried transition lenses and it worsened my vision dramatically and rapidly! I went back to sunglasses and the change after a year was much less!

Try contacts with regular sunglasses, if you're ready.

  5. I bought a pair last summer for my boyfriend.  They do work.  The part that I think is amazing is that the majority of the time he does not realized they have darkened when he is out in the sun yet from my perspective they are as dark as my sunglasses.  I have had him take them off to see if he then sees the difference from having them on or off and he does then notice the brightness of the sun.

I have to say from the both of us, yes, transitions are worth every penny.  We spent more than the price of transitions for regular sunglasses, so to have a combo to where he can see and have sunglasses when he is out in the sun is a great thing.

Your dad may not think it works because as the wearer he usually will not notice the transition.  And the glasses adjust according to the brightness.  Like the previous answer, it will not adjust very much in a car, but if you are outside in direct sunlight on a bright day it will get darker, but not as dark  compared to a cloudy day.  So, I think they are very cool.
