My daughters name is Phoenix Freedom Rain, can anyone translate her name to Gaeilge? I'm curious...Is there no gaeilge word for Phoenix?..I've tried to look it up on the internet.

Also I read not to call the irish language gaelic, it's gaeilge...am I correct...I do not want to offend anyone!?

Thanks ever so much for your help!

  1. Yes it is Gaelige, Gaelic is a sport.

    Her name would be

______ (There's no word for Phoenix, at least I can't find one!)

Saoirse (Freedom and this is an Irish name! sear-sha)

    Baisteach (Rain b-osh-tuck)

  2. OK Here Goes

    Phoenix is Ean dar Bladham

    Freedom is Saoirse

    Rain is Baisteach/ Baisti

there is no literal translation for Phoenix but putting it in context Ean dar Bladham translates as bird of Flames. when there is no trans "as Gaeilge" you  can use the descriptive text.

your right Irish language is called Gaeilge and when you want something put into Irish you refer to this as "as Gaeilge" (sounds like "auss Gaeilge") Gaelic is only used in reference to one of our national sports "Gaelic Football"

    i tried hope it helps

  3. The only word there that is actually a name is Saoirse(Sear-sah) The rest are translations of words but if you were to call your child that it would make no sense. Better to get it tattooed in English

  4. I've never heard it called gaelige.  Is that yet another crazy American PC-ism that hasn't reached British shores yet?

  5. Ur right to call it Gaeilge, though (in my opinion) u could just call it Irish.

The literal translations are already answered above, but some words are translated phonetically (eg. film, karate, carpet and other modern words)

Phonetically, the name would probably be Phíonics Phraoidom Raen.

Please feel free to correct me if someone sees a problem with my pronounciation.

  6. Phoenix = Féinics (fay-nix)

    Freedom = Saoirse (seer-sha)

Rain = Báisteach (baw-shtuch, soft "ch")

But it's pointless translating names.  Nobody would actually call a child Báisteach (even though Saoirse is actually a name).  If you met a French guy called Pierre, you wouldn't translate his name and call him Rock, would you?

Gaeilge is the word for the Irish language, in Irish.  But it's fine to just call it Irish.

  7. jajaja! That might have been my comment! It won't offend anyone by saying 'Gaelic', you might just sound really, really foreign! Irish people don't have a problem with foreigners, but wouldn't you rather sound in the know?!!! Also, I don't even say Gaeilge, I just say Irish, but my Irish teacher calls it Gaeilge. Don't translate a name into Irish, what you end up with will make no sense! It is a beautiful name though. For the tattoo, if you really want something to do with Ireland, try a harp, fairy or shamrock. xxx♥♥♥x*x Capaz De Todo ;-)

  8. What's the name in Irish for the Phoenix Park? Pairc na Foinse, isn't it? Or is 'Phoenix' merely an anglicisation of 'Foinse', and does this mean something different?
