Translate the verbal phrase into an expression- 1/3 of a number y? + a word problem. [Basic Algebra]?

In bowling, scoring is done by frame, with a frame consisting of two attempts to knock down all the pins. A spare occurs when it takes botg attempts to knock down all 10 pins. The score for a spare in the current frame is found by adding the number of pins knocked down in the spare in the current frame.

a. write an expression for the score of the spare if you knock down p pins in the first attempt of the next frame.

b. what is your score for a spare if you knock down 7 pins in the first attempt of the next frame?

Help; explain.

  1. Let me try and explain the spare thing in an easier way. When you get a spare in bowling, it essentially means that your score for that frame consists of *3* throws..the pins you knock down on 1st attempt, the pins you knock down to make the full 10 (the "spare") and then however many pins you knock down for your first ball of the FOLLOWING frame.

    Here's an example:

Say, you throw an 8 for the first ball of the 7th frame. Then you "pick up the spare" by knocking down the remaining 2. On the first ball of the NEXT frame (the 8th), you roll a strike. Here's the score for your 7th frame:

    8+2+10 (a strike is worth 10)=20

Now, using the same logic in question A, what algebra equation could you write that would show a spare plus 'p' pins knocked down in the next frame?

For question B, they're asking you to solve the first equation by substituting the number 7 for variable 'p'.

Sincerely hope this clears it up a bit..

  2. eek, that's worded difficultly.

you've made a typo which confused me for a bit (botg - is that supposed to be both)

ok so a spare is when it takes two throws of the ball (a frame) at the pins to knock all 10 of them over.

the bit explaining how the scoring works isn't that clear - but i think (from memory) that if you get a spare in bowling that the score is carried to the next shot (a 3rd throw in the next frame) somehow -  the way i understand it p is how many pins you knock over in the 3rd throw

the way i read the explanation if you got a spare then hit 5 pegs you'd score 15 (for the 3 throws) - but i don't think that's correct since a spare is supposed to give the player a bonus score.

perhaps someone can give you a little more clarification on how the scoring works in bowling
