Translating "suburb" in Japanese?

I believe that KOUGAI is the translation for SUBURB. Is this correct?

How would it be used in a sentence such as decribing you grew up in the Los Angles suburbs or Chicago suburbs?

Would I say - Chikago kougai de sodachimashita

  1. 郊外 is suburb in Japanize

  2. There are a couple words you can use. One is "kougai" (郊外) and the other is "kinkou" (近郊). Both can be used for "suburb" but "kougai" has a little broader meaning whereas "kinkou" (because it uses the kanji 近 which means "close" or "near") implies something like "near suburbs".

If you want to say you grew up in the suburbs of Chicago the you could say.

"shikagoshi no umaresodachi deshita" シカゴ市の生まれ育ちでした ("born and raised in Chicago")

    "shikago s**+ de sodachimashita/sodatta"

    シカゴ市で育ちました/育った

You can switch LA (or any other city for Chicago). You can also drop the "s**+" (市)from the city names if you like.

Finally, L.A. is usually written in Japanese as ロサンゼルス ("rosanzerusu") but is sometimes abbreviated as just ロス ("rosu").

Sometimes it's written as ロスアンジェルス ("rosuanjerusu") but it's not as common.

I am pretty sure that the spelling ロサンジェルス is not used at all, at least not among the Japanese. Sounds like a made up spelling.

  3. kanji: 郊外

    kana: こうがい

    romaji: kougai

And I might say "Shikago no kougai de sodachimashita." Make sure it's "Chicago's suburbs," otherwise it's just two words in a row that don't have any relationship.

  4. Shikago no kougai de sodachimashita. <polite>

    シカゴの郊外で育ちました。

Shikago no kougai de sodatta <casual>

    シカゴの郊外で育った。

You can exchange Shikago for Rosanjerusu (ロサンジェルス)

  5. suburb in japanese mean is "郊外"
