translating these foods, into french. im in a french one class and we have a group project about restaurants and ordering, and what not. one part of our grade is to create a menu, each person has to create, and some of the foods i chose werent listed in the foods the teacher gave us.

Boissonere: cappucino milk shake, orange surprise

entree: country fried steak, mash potato, ciabatta bread

1st course: deep fried calamari, hush puppies

Some words don't translate very well, for instance, cappuccino is Italian, and the same word is used in French.  A milkshake is milk-shake, mashed potatoes are purée de pommes de terre (or just purée). Calamari is likewise the same in French, so it's calamari frit.  As for country fried steak and hush puppies, I am afraid there are no words for these in French (since the French wouldn't even classify them as food....) and I'm not sure what an orange surprise even is! (but the literal translation would be surprise a l'orange)

  3. boisson: milkshake au cappucino, surprise à l'orange (I guess coz we don't have orange surprise in france, so I can't really translate...)

    Entrée: (which seems more like the plat de résistance): boeuf roti à la campagnarde, écrasé de pomme de terre (a posh way to say 'purée'), pain ciabatta

    Plat de résistance: Calamars fris et poisson pané (though hush puppies is a french rock group)

    I don;t think we have such thing as "hush puppies" in France.

    cappucino milk shake = milk shake (au) cappucino

    orange surprise = same (i guess)

    country fried steak = I would say there is no "correct" or official translation for that. the best I can come up with is the basic "steak grille".

    mash potato = puree

    ciabatta bred = ciabatta (or "pain ciabatta")

    deep fried calamari = calamars frits

    by the way: in france we try NOT to fry everything... add some vegies + fruits ;) . and frying a steak is a sin!!! (we grill them instead... this is why you'll never find french people in h**l... ;) )

    We usually dont say how the steak has been cooked (grilled / boiled / fried...) we name the style of cooking instead (eg "stew") or the sauce that comes with the meat (eg "entrecote sauce bearnaise = rib eye with bearnaise sauce)

    good luck with your french course. our language is a bit challenging (expecially the grammar...)
