Transmission acting up on '05 Ford Escape

Sorry, this may become a long post....

This started a few months ago when it would feel and sound like it shifts into drive, but the engine would rev like it was in neutral when I press on the gas and then slam hard into gear... Never managed to find the time to take it in then, though....

Then, starting a few weeks ago, it started popping out of gear while driving. First couple times, it just shifted itself into neutral (and the display on the dash indicated neutral).. Move handle to neutral and back into gear would get it back in gear...

Then, one morning, I felt it pop out of gear while driving forward... Looked at the dash, and the indicator was rapidly moving around, including into reverse for a split second. (Guy behind me honked at me, so I presume he saw my backup lights flash..) Couple nights later, when I was trying to get it into reverse, the backup lights would come on, but when I hear and felt it go into gear, the lights went off and it actually had shifted into drive... Took no less than 6 attempts to get it to shift into and stay in reverse....

Somewhere in the middle of all this, a major transmission slip put the check engine light on...

Took it in to Ford this past Wednesday.. They changed the transmission fluid (which they said was very dirty), and found a couple codes on the computer (which I don't understand, and don't remember..). They reset the codes, but the problem didn't recur on their test drive, so that's all they did on it....

Since then, I've had zero problems with it popping out of gear, but the shifting into drive when selecting reverse happened to me again this morning on my way to work....

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what might be causing this?

Can post further details if required, just ask...
