OK, I drive a 1990 Jeep pick up with a 5 Speed Transmission. The other day while getting off the highway, my pick up started making a loud clanging noise, and when I shifted gears, I could feel a strong vibration in the stick shift. I dropped it off with a mechanic, and the next day, he called and said I need a new transmission, and he could rebuild this one for 1,500 dollars. I told him I couldn't afford it right now, and I picked my my truck and slowly drove home. I called another mechanic, and he said that it might not be that serious, and to see if I can shift through all the gears, because if I could it might just be out of transmission fluid. Well, I went out and shifted through all the gears without any problem, and anyway which mechanic is right? How serious does this sound? Thanks!!!

  1. Always start with checking fluid levels. Then look at what is in the fluid, metallic pieces tell a lot. Brass is usually syncros, steel is usually gears or shifting fork material. Burnt fluid means low level and this means leakage from seals. Adding fluid may improve things for the moment, but eventually you will have to have it repaired.

  2. you could just need new syncros its would be a common problem for a truck or car that old the syncros are what makes it smoother and easier for you to shift into gear and when they go bad the vehicle may be hard to shift or it can slip out of gear or slightly slip out of gear and it would make that sound and you would defiantly be able to feel it through the shifter. your tyanny probably doesn't need a rebuild. It could also just be that the shift linkage needs to be adjusted or the throw out bearing could be bad. what ever the case I would get it check out by a different mechanic.

  3. it is very possible that a bearing is going bad. a input shaft bearing does not see much lube. if it goes bad it will put a strain and vib. on the transmission components

  4. Sounds to me like the drive line!! lol I'd get another mech.!!

  5. I don't know who's right but I would get another trans here:  http://car-part.com  and have someone install it.
