Question:

Transmission problems? - Please Help!?

to start off, before i got my car (98 mercury sable), it was sitting in a driveway not moving for a year.

okay so my car is having a problem that it was having a few months earlier. the problem is that occasionally, the gears won't switch and so i'm driving at like 45mph (normal speeds) with the engine revving up way too high, almost redlining.

last time, we took it in the shop and they changed a broken speed sensor in the transmission. Now it's doing the same thing again, and it's been about 6-7 months. Could the transmission fluid be low? I'm thinking there's a leak, but I have no idea what the problem could be. Does anyone know what would cause a car to not be able to switch into higher gears? It's almost like the gears are getting stuck whilst trying to switch.

  1. Sure it could be low on fluid, start the engine up ,then pull the dip stick for the tranny and see if it's low. They make so stuff caled SEA FOAM for transmission that really works good for trannys that are having the problems that your having. All you do is pour it into the transmission and drive it around for a while ,then just park it for a little while and you should be ready to go by the next time you drive your car.By the way you can by the sea foam at your local auto parts store.

  2. The speed sensor MUST be bad again. It is an odd failure for a sensor to go out that quickly though. There might be something up with the trans that is harming the sensors. I would also have the trans fluid and filter changed. The only other thing that would be a "common" problem would be trash in the trans fluid that has a shifting fluid port clogged up.Where a fluid and filter change would be in order. Along with a total trans flush.

Do not drive the car when its not shifting properly. maxing out the R.P.M.'s is very bad for the engine and could cause catastrophic damage and/or total failure.

  3. Yes it is poss able it is low..  Check the trans fluid while the car is running.

  4. Yes, We give you permission to check the fluid.
