I have a 1997 Hyundai Elantra. The transmission will down shift while driving and start driving at a higher rpm. What could the problem be? How much will it cost to fix it?

  1. My friend had a similar problem on an Elantra GL wagon.  It turned out to be a faulty electrical plug and connector on the outside of the transmission case.

  2. Its not a big problem. Just get the fluids replaced its just dirty. Its cheap at any auto shop. Tell them I would like a transmission flush............

  3. Sounds like it needs to be rebuilt, I would say the range is anywhere between 2000-2800 dollars, make sure you get a one year 12,000 mile warranty parts and labor.

  4. squirt some fluid in it if its low...1500 for rebuild minimum

  5. take it and let a transmission do a test drive on it they wont charge you nothing for this and then they can tell you what they think it will cost to repair it,it may be something simple wrong with it,good luck.

  6. Have it checked by a transmission shop. May not be as bad as you think.

  7. there are a couple things that can cause this and most of them can be easy and cheap. one is to make sure your servicing and doing maintenance often to ensure things like this don't happen, but since they are never mind (just so you know after u fix this one). 2 is i always find checking all components such as over drive isn't on (I'm a crazy driver so i know this feature does exactly what you describe). 3 do you throttle too much? (pressing gas peddle and releasing too often) does this happen in city or on highway? and how often do u put oil in the transmission? to end this missuri answer, transmission maintenance can be very expensive. on an older car like yours it could be much more difficult to find parts for that trans not like its rare i just mean parts that won't give u problems later on? and in any case it would be best to buy a whole new one...tho i doubt u want to spend up to 4G to have a new transmission installed? 4Gs can actually get u a newer but used car and choosing right u can find one without any problems at all...  i hope this helps if it doesn't the best advice is just to take it to A:dealer or B: a decent to highly respected ASE certified tech (though i must warn u they don't like older cars too much due to the fast moving pace of technological advancements).   I always took transmissions made in japan to be quite excellent considering loads American made cars actually use them...take your time and choose your options wisely.
