Transom and boat motor shaft question?

if my boats tramsom is 20" can I use a boat motor with a 20" inch shaft if i do use the 20" shaft will i have a chance with the prop hitting the back of the boat or should i get a 25" instead. Thanks.

  1. You need the 20" to keep your cavitation plate close to the surface of the water the 25" would put you too deep and there would be more drag. that's the way to get optimum performance.


  2. hee hee... no, the shaft length of an engine should match the transom height... that is how you pair them up.... :0)

  3. A outboard motor should never hit the boat transom.The exceptions are the 5hp and below models that have only a foward gear and neutral.Or you might be refering to a trolling motor.

  4. The 20" is what you need.

  5. go with the 20 inch shaft and hang it with the holes that make it 6 inches below the back of your boat

  6. You would want to use the 20" or your prop will be too deep in the water. Your performance will suffer. The shaft length means what size transom it's for.
