  1. Hostas are so resilient and like the shade so anytime will be okay except too late in the fall it wouldn't gave enough time for root development...

  2. I split my hostas in the autumn after they bloom. This avatar shows one that's been split every few years since the early 1900s. Bleeding Hearts I've divided right after they bloom. I take a spade, push it straight into the ground and then I use the spade to lift the piece I want to move. Oh, sorry, I should have said that I've already prepared a hole wherever I want to establish the plant I'm moving.

  3. Transplant in the Spring because this gives them time to grow strong roots before the heat gets to be too much. Fall is not good in certain regions because if it gets too cold too soon without the plant being established,  it could die.

  4. I recommend you wait until the spring.

  5. It really depends on what zone you live in... how hot it gets, how cold the winters are, ect.  I'm in zone 4, and have done it both ways, in the spring and in the fall.  Because of our cold winters, a division too late in the summer doesn't give the plant long enough to reestablish itself and I've lost them.   They just didn't come up again the next spring.  I've had the best results with dividing in the spring... they have all summer to get established and grow roots.  And they're so much easier to divide when the shoots are just coming out of the ground in the spring, you're not fighting a big plant and all the leaves.  Check your zone and see what's best for your area, but if you have cold winters, where your plants actually freeze, wait til spring.
