Transponder keys. Just how reliable are these things?

Can one die and stop working? I just bought a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder and have had it for 3 days. My wife drove it to work today and after leaving the kids at daycare, she had trouble starting it. The starter would turn but the engine would not turn over. She got it started, but it happened again on her lunch break.

I looked it up online and found out about people having problems with their transponder keys needing to be reprogrammed. Some said the dealer service guys didn't think it was the keys and it ended up being just that.

Just how reliable are these things and could anything interfere with them operating correctly?

  1. my answer is try to check it out first on auto repair shop maybe there are problem..

  2. Transponder keys are supposed to be very reliable. I have never heard of 1 just quit working. The only way for a key to stop working that i know of is for someone to go into the ecu of the car (with expensive testing equipment) and erase the keys that are currently programed. or if the chip was took out of the key which is highly improbable
